New Nozzle Control Technology Introduced by Mercedes Textiles

Mercedes Textiles Ltd. introduces LPX Technology to improve nozzle control in small diameter handlines operating at low pressures, reducing kinking and whip while maintaining flow and agility.

In order to enhance nozzle control in small diameter handlines running at low pressures, Mercedes Textiles Ltd. introduced Low Pressure Expansion (LPX) Technology.

Many 1.5-inch handlines have found it difficult to offer the stability needed for successful fire attack as low-pressure nozzles become more popular and National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) flow requirements change. Lower operating pressures cause the hose stream's internal support to decrease, which frequently leads to kinking and nozzle whip. However, when charged, a standard 1.5-inch double-jacket hose can expand to almost 2 inches, adding weight and drag that frequently exceeds 90 pounds per 50 feet.

Departments are searching for more effective ways to streamline their assault packages without compromising flow or effectiveness because they are already juggling a shortage of personnel with more demanding fireground conditions.

“Firefighters told us they value the weight and maneuverability of smaller diameter lines—but need better control at the nozzle,” said Bob Richardson, President of Mercedes Textiles Ltd. “LPX was designed to solve that problem in a simple, targeted way.”

Only the crucial hose segment closest to the nozzle, where control is most crucial, is reinforced by LPX. Without sacrificing mobility, packability, or general hose handling, LPX increases hose stability under low-pressure operation, reducing whip and kinking.

“The goal is to keep the nozzle forward and stable, with stiffness where it actually matters,” said Kevin Moul, vice president of Witmer / The Fire Store and Mercedes’ innovation partner. “By reinforcing just the last few feet, LPX improves control and performance right at the point of attack.”

The KrakenEXO LPX 1.5-inch and ExoMetro LPX 1.75-inch are two of Mercedes' small diameter EXO lines that incorporate this technology. This patent-pending technology gives the smaller diameter attack line the nozzle-end control needed for assured low-pressure operations while maintaining its key benefits, such as less weight, decreased drag and increased agility.

“Our mission is helping firefighters operate more effectively with the resources they have,” said Jamie Emblem, Northeast Sales at Mercedes Textiles. “LPX strengthens the case for 1.5-inch handlines by delivering the flow and control needed—while reducing overall weight and improving maneuverability.”

Compared to conventional 1.75-inch double-jacket hose, LPX Technology allows departments to reach flows of 150–160-gpm at 50–75 PSI while lowering line weight by up to 30 percent.
