Chesapeake firefighters battled a “significant” apartment fire Friday afternoon in the Great Bridge section of the city, according to a news release.
Dispatchers received multiple 911 calls just after 1:15 p.m. about the fire at the Great Bridge Apartments, located on Williamsburg Drive off S. Battlefield Boulevard near Great Bridge Middle School, the department said.
When fire personnel arrived at the scene, heavy smoke and fire was seen in a two-story apartment building, the release said.
The fire spread rapidly through the attic space, forcing firefighters to transition to a defensive operation, the department said. The fire was not brought under control until 2:46 p.m.
One man was treated at the scene after experiencing a medical emergency. He was taken to a local hospital for evaluation, the fire department said.
Eight apartments sustained heavy damage, either from fire, smoke or water. Fourteen adults were left out of their homes, the department said.
The cause of the fire has not been determined.
