A car that rolled down an embankment on Interstate 680 in Fremont set fire to dry grass on Sunday afternoon, triggering a 40-acre fire.

The car was traveling north on I-680 near the Vargas Road exit in Fremont when it went off the road at 3:55 p.m., said California Highway Patrol officer Jeremy Holeman. A woman and two children with unspecified injuries were taken from the car to Washington Hospital after the accident.

``The fire raced up the hill,'' spreading to adjacent grassland, said Fremont Fire Department Division Chief Geoff LaTendresse.

There are no homes in the area, and no one was injured by the blaze, LaTendresse said. One building, thought to be a barn, was destroyed.

Fifty firefighters -- using 17 engines, two helicopters and two small airplanes -- contained the fire by 5:15 p.m.

Sunday's relatively cool temperatures and light winds kept the fire from spreading quickly, La Tendresse said.

One lane and an off-ramp of I-680 were closed for about two hours. They were reopened about 6:20 p.m.
