A veteran Sacramento firefighter is recovering from a harrowing ordeal in which colleagues rescued him as he began to fall through the roof of a commercial building during a fire.

KCRA captured dramatic footage of the firefighter with the lower half of his body already through the roof as colleagues reached out to grab him before pulling him free and away from danger on Wednesday.

“Shock, disbelief a little bit,” is how Sacramento Fire Department spokesperson Capt. Keith Wade described those scary moments on the the roof of a children's store in the Arden area. The crew was on the roof checking for hot spots after the fire had been knocked down.

“When you know personally people involved and you’re seeing something happen in real-time that you can’t personally do anything for, it really hits home," Wade added. "It can swell you with some emotion."

The firefighter, whose name has yet to be released, is a 21-year veteran and a captain.
