Knife-Wielding NH Man Confronts FFs at House Fire

Oct. 25, 2019
Carrying a knife and a machete, the Stratham homeowner stopped responding crews from putting out the three-alarm fire, police said.

A man wielding a machete confronted New Hampshire firefighters while his home was on fire Thursday.

When crews responded to a three-alarm fire at around 3 a.m. at a house in Stratham, they were met by Edwin Aviles, who was carrying a knife and a machete, WMUR-TV reports. Neighbors said he wouldn't let firefighters at the burning house and yelled that the residence was going to explode.

Police told WBZ-TV that Aviles, 51, would not drop the knives and appeared to be suffering from mental health issues. Eventually, a taser was used to subdue him, and firefighters were able to put out the blaze.

Aviles was arrested and charged with resisting detention. He also could face additional charges, according to police.
