June 19, 2020
Although 65 Jacksonville firefighters were able to save the back half of the building, the large blaze still partially destroyed the structure early Friday.

An early Friday fire partially destroyed a commercial building near the city's Mixon Town area, according to the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department.

Firefighters were called out about 4:30 a.m. to the building in the 500 block of Nixon Street, right of Edison Avenue, the fire department said. The first crews on scene reported heavy fire showing, and more firefighters were summoned.

By 5 a.m., the fire had grown in size as more firefighters were called in, the fire department said. Then all crews were ordered out of the building for their safety as the battle to save the structure moved outside, the fire department said.

The fire was called under control just after 5:30 a.m., 65 firefighters called in at one point to fight the blaze and mostly save the back half of the building, the chief told news partner First Coast News. The state fire marshal was called in to help investigate, fire officials said.

No injuries were reported, and no cause for the fire has been determined yet, fire officials said.
