SAN LEANDRO, CA—A fire at a paper plant late Sunday night spread quickly and required a second squadron of firefighters to completely corral the flames, according to authorities.
The large fire erupted at the Georgia-Pacific paper manufacturing plant, on the 2800 block of Alvarado Street in San Leandro, and by 11:15 p.m., a second alarm had been called. Within two hours, 50 firefighters were battling the blaze, according to Alameda County Fire. The fire was not extinguished until about 5 a.m., according to news reports.
There was no immediate information on how the fire started or the extent of the damage it caused.
In a social media post, Georgia Pacific said it expected to resume normal operations on Monday.
"We appreciate the rapid response by the (Alameda County Fire Department) and other first responders to address the fire at our box plant in San Leandro. The fire is now out. Thankfully there are no injuries. The facility expects to start back up this morning as scheduled," the company wrote in a statement.
