KS Firefighters Pull Seriously Injured Child from Burning House
A child with injuries considered potentially life-threatening was removed by Topeka firefighters late Tuesday afternoon from a burning house at 710 S.W. Polk, authorities said.
The name, age and gender of the child weren't being released.
The fire's cause was undetermined but appeared more likely than not to be due to a juvenile's playing with a lighter, said Topeka Fire Marshal Todd Harrison.
The Topeka Fire Department was called at 4:16 p.m. to the scene, said a dispatcher for the Shawnee County Emergency Communications Center.
Firefighters found smoke and flames coming from the two-story house, where three occupants had managed to evacuate before they arrived, Harrison said.
Firefighters searched the house and found one unconscious juvenile victim, he said.
The blaze was determined to have begun at the northwest corner of the building's second floor, Harrison said.
He said damages were estimated at $30,000, including $20,000 to the structure and $10,000 to its contents.
Six people were displaced as a result of the fire, Harrison said.
He said Topeka firefighters were assisted at the scene by the Kansas State Fire Marshal's Office, the Topeka Police Department, Evergy, Kansas Gas Service, the American Red Cross and American Medical Response ambulance employees.
No working smoke detectors were found in the house, Harrison said.
The house was built in 1900, according to the website of the Shawnee County Appraiser's Office. The property had an appraised value of $32,400, that site said.
