Six People Injured in CO Boat Explosion, Fire

Aug. 9, 2020
Poudre firefighters needed nearly two hours to extinguish a boat fire that erupted when the craft's engine exploded on the Horsetooth Reservoir in Larimer County.

Six people sustained injuries after a boat caught fire in Horsetooth Reservoir on Saturday morning in Larimer County.

Four people were hospitalized, and two were treated at the scene, the Poudre Fire Authority tweeted.

Fire officials responded around 8:45 a.m to the boat fully engulfed in flames, Chris Wolf, spokesman for Poudre Fire, said. Witnesses said that they were having engine trouble, and when they went to restart it, the engine exploded, Wolf said.

Firefighters gained control of the flames at 10:22 a.m. By that time, the boat was “pretty well destroyed,” Wolf said.

Boat fires are quite rare, Wolf said, noting that in his eight years he had seen maybe one or two others — and not nearly on this scale.
