Exploding oil barrels set off a massive fire at a New York towing company Thursday and crews spent hours getting the flames under control.
The blaze broke out shortly before 3 p.m. at the T&R Environmental Services Haz Mat building next to T&R Towing in Bath, the village stated in an online upate. As firefighters reached the scene, the structure was fully involved, and several fireballs from the exploding barrels erupted into the sky in fiery clouds of thick black smoke.
Along with the Bath Volunteer Fire Department, 15 other departments were called in to help put out the blaze. Firefighters were able to protect the dispatch office, which sustained minor damage, but the environmental warehouse and a nearby auto parts store were destroyed, according to the towing company.
No serious injuries were reported in the incident, but the towing company said one person suffered a minor injury and was treated at the scene. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
