MI Firefighter Injured in Structure Blaze

As Kalamazoo firefighters battle the blaze, flames spread across a significant portion of the upper floor of the building and collapsed the roof over about six units.

KALAMAZOO, MI—One firefighter suffered a minor injury in a fire that broke out in Kalamazoo Friday night.

The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety received reports of a structure fire at the Red Roof Inn on East Cork Street around 10 p.m. Friday. Public safety officers found heavy smoke and flames coming from the business, a news release said.

Firefighters reported Friday night that the fire had spread across a significant portion of the upper floor of the building. They said that the roof had collapsed over approximately six units.

The fire was brought under control in under an hour, and according to the release, one firefighter was transported to a local hospital after sustaining a minor injury.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the fire marshal’s office.
