A woman in her 40s who was pulled from a two-alarm fire at a multi-family home by New Haven firefighters was pronounced dead at the scene.

A woman is dead and at least one other person is injured after a two-alarm fire early Monday in a multi-family house in New Haven.

The fire at 151 Saltonstall Ave. displaced a dozen people — seven adults and five children, said Rick Fontana, director of the Office of Emergency Management.

The fire was reported shortly after 1:30 a.m., and fire officials called for a second team of firefighters and equipment at 1:50 a.m., he said. Firefighters rescued a woman and a male fire victim from the burning building, but the woman was pronounced dead. The woman was in her 40s, fire officials said.

The man was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital and then transferred to the Connecticut Burn Center at Bridgeport Hospital, Fontana said.

The American Red Cross is helping the displaced residents as officials continue to investigate the fire, he said.
