RI Firefighters Quickly Knock Down Structure Fire

Providence firefighters battled a fire that broke out on the third floor of a building Sunday, displacing nine families and a landscaping business.

PROVIDENCE — A two-alarm fire at 69 Bowdoin St. in Olneyville displaced nine families Sunday afternoon.

Firefighters arrived to see heavy flames on the third floor. A check of the building indicated that everyone was out.

Deputy Chief Brian Mahoney told reporters that it took 25 minutes to put out the flames. The amount of water needed to do that resulted in water damage on the first and second floors, he told ABC6 News.

Besides housing 22 people, the address is also home to a landscaping company.

Fourteen adults and eight children are being helped by the American Red Cross, starting with personal care items and a place to stay Sunday night, as well as packets loaded with information useful in recovering from a fire. Later, the families will get help with forming a plan for the longer term.

A house at a different address on Bowdoin Street was hit twice by gunfire last week. Police found 17 shell casings outside and more just inside the front door after gunfire was exchanged at 99 Bowdoin St. at 6 a.m. Saturday, and an unconfirmed report said the same house was shot at 31 times on Thursday.
