Oct. 27—COEYMANS, NY — Smoke from a burning scrap pile at the Port of Coeymans could be smelled as far away as Hudson on Wednesday morning.

Fire officials in the city across the Hudson River said firefighters were called out to investigate a report of fire near a parking garage at Columbia Memorial Hospital but determined the smoke was billowing from across the river.

Smoke could be smelled across Hudson and it persisted throughout the morning.

Officials in Albany County confirmed the scrap heap — possibly from a pile of scrapped cars — burned throughout the morning. Firefighters remained at the scene at 8:30 a.m.

"I'm sorry, we have no comment," said a woman who answered the phone at the port's terminal.
