Firefighters in the St. Louis area were hard at work over a 24-hour span as they battled multi-alarm fires at a pair of abandoned warehouses.

St. Louis-area firefighters have had a busy 24 hours battling a pair of multi-alarm warehouse fires.

The first fire was a four-alarm that erupted at a abandoned one-story warehouse in Jennings on Thursday afternoon, with crews from over a dozen departments responding to tackle the flames.

The facility was once the site of a bowling ball factory, and there was concern about possible hazardous materials inside, prompting a call for a hazmat team and an emergency warning for nearby residents to close their windows and remain inside.

Crews set up a lengthy defensive operation and were still knocking the fire down at 9 p.m., according to the St. Louis Post Dispatch, which also reported that firefighters would remain on scene through the evening to handle hot spots and secure the scene.
