Ammo Cache Impedes NY Firefighters

Dec. 7, 2021
A boarded-up vacant structure loaded with ammunition going off delayed Rochester firefighters' efforts to control it.

Rochester firefighters were hampered at a vacant dwelling fire on Burbank Street Monday morning as crews worked to gain access with ammunition exploding inside.

When crews arrived at the vacant boarded-up home, heavy fire was pushing from second story windows with the sound of ammunition popping off.

A fire official told WHEC News, “In this case, it gave us some time to breathe. And by the time we had all the windows opened up, the boards taken off, and some ventilation going, the popping stopped, and then we were able to make an aggressive interior attack."

Once the crews were able to gain access to the structure, they brought the fire under control.

According to authorities, no one was in the home.

Officials said there was evidence that people had been entering the structure and considered it suspicious.
