Firefighters in Charleston made multiple rescues during a fire that damaged or destroyed over 50 units in multiple apartment buildings Monday morning.
Charleston firefighters were called to the Palms Apartments for a report of smoke in the hallway and first arriving crews located the fire in Building 220 and it necessitated immediate rescues.
“We had people on balconies that had to be immediately rescued from the building,” Charleston Fire Marshal Mike Julazadeh told News 2 Charleston. "We had four or five people that were rescued."
Over 100 firefighters and other public safety officials worked to control the blaze that impacted multiple buildings.
Fire officials said five of the seven buildings sustained enough damage that they will need to be demolished.
