Fire Damages Former WA Elementary School

Feb. 17, 2022
Fire crews from multiple departments battled a two-alarm fire in a former SeaTac elementary school.

Multiple fire departments responded to a two-alarm fire at the former Maywood Elementary School in SeaTac on Tuesday night and into Wednesday morning.

Responding firefighters switched quickly from offensive to defensive tactics because of the intensity of the blaze, said Pat Pawlak, division chief for the Puget Sound Regional Fire Authority. That means the initial focus was on preventing the spread of the fire rather than on putting it out completely. It took seven hours to put it down, he said.

There were no reported injuries, he said. The origin and cause of the fire have not yet been determined.

South 200 Street was closed in the area of 14th Avenue South for hours.

The school has been surplus property of the Highline School District since it was closed to students in the 1970s.

Last year, the district officials signaled interest in selling the industrially zoned property for redevelopment.

The selected developer, Bride Development, has submitted preliminary plans to the city of SeaTac showing three industrial buildings on about 16.5 acres, according to the SeaTac blog.
