Audit of HI Department Shows Weaknesses

A recent audit of the Hawaii County Fire Department has exposed weaknesses within the organization needing to be addressed and provided recommendations.

A recent audit of the Hawaii County Fire Department has made a list of recommendations addressing areas multiple areas including, apparatus, stations, and staffing to name a few.

The purpose of the fire department audit was to determine if services are being provided: effectively, efficiently, comply with relevant governance, and whether resources in their current allocations, contribute or limit program success.

Based on the audit’s objectives and the evaluation of various performance categories, there were thirteen recommendations made, according to the final performance report.

Some of the suggestions include developing a comprehensive apparatus profile and implementing an apparatus maintenance and replacement plan.

The report addressed overtime and made recommendations to include enforcing internal controls to limit rank-for-rank overtime to ninety-six hours for each quadrimester, and to follow and enforce the non-emergency overtime policy.

There were also recommendations to evaluate the volunteer program by providing incentives for participation and to invest in infrastructure and training for the volunteer program.

The report also addressed setting a number of annual training hour for each member based on their position and training needs.
