MO Crews Forced to Evacuate from Quickly Spreading Fire

Sept. 19, 2023
A partial collapse forced Kansas City firefighters to evacuate from the apartment building fire that spread to two homes.

Firefighters battled a blaze late Monday that spread from an apartment building to two homes in Kansas City.

Crews responded around 10:40 p.m. to the 4400 block of Virginia Avenue, where there was heavy fire from a two-story four unit apartment building, said Michael Hopkins, a spokesman for the Kansas City Fire Department.

The fire spread to houses to the north and south of the apartment building, and the incident was upgraded to a two-alarm fire.

A partial collapse forced firefighters to evacuate from the apartment building. Crews used hoses on the exterior of the building and were eventually able to re-enter one of the houses.

No injuries have been reported. The apartment building and home to the south are vacant structures.

KCFD is investigating the cause of the fire.
