A Mississippi firefighter was injured by debris while battling an unattended cooking fire at an apartment that displaced 16 families early Saturday.

Flames and smoke were seen erupting at about 4 a.m. from a Jackson apartment complex, WJTV-TV reports. A firefighter was taken to the hospital after he was hit from falling wreckage, and a police officer suffered smoke inhalation.

Both first responders are expected to recover from their injuries.
