Houston firefighters worked for around 12 hours to put out a massive blaze at a recycling plant that had surrounding neighborhoods under a shelter-in-place order.

The fire at the Independent Texas Recyclers facility broke out shortly before 4 p.m. Wednesday with as many as 35 units responding to the scene, according to the Houston Fire Department. Thick plumes of black smoke could be seen for several miles, and a shelter-in-place order went into effect within a half-mile radius of the plant as a precaution, KHOU-TV reports.

As crews battled the flames, hazardous material teams monitored air and water quality. Firefighters eventually were able to get control of the blaze and were clearing the scene by around 4:30 a.m. Thursday.

The shelter-in-place order was lifted for the surrounding area, and no injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
