More than 30 firefighters from multiple departments battled a fire that destroyed a waterfront home in San Leon and spread to two nearby houses.

Crews from multiple departments battled a large waterfront fire that destroyed one house and damaged two others Wednesday.

The fire broke out at a home in San Leon at around 5 a.m., KTRK-TV reports. Flames shot into the air and gutted one residence before spreading to two neighboring houses.

"This one over here was pretty intense," San Leon Fire Chief Ken Keller said. "The one in the middle is intense. We got in there and did what we could do to knock it down."

Five people had been inside the house when the original fire erupted, and another person was in a nearby trailer. They all were able to safely escape the flames, and a family also was reunited with their two dogs.

More than 30 firefighters worked for about an hour to get the fire under control. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
