A fire at a chemical plant in Southlake resulted in evacuations and school lockdowns Wednesday afternoon.
Firefighters saw heavy smoke showing as they approached the area shortly after 1:23 p.m. and requested a second alarm, CBS DFW reported.
One metal building was fully engulfed in fire, and a second also had smoke showing.
Due to safety concerns, schools were notified to shelter in place, and area residents were evacuated. Roads were shut down as well.
Southlake Deputy Chief Jeremy Wilson told reporters that the measures were taken immediately since the incident involved chemicals. He said firefighters observed placards and researched the types of materials involved.
When asked about the reason for the lockdowns, Wilson said: "The safety of the public is paramount," he said.
The fire was deemed under control at 2:45 p.m., he noted.
Wilson said Hazmat teams will be continuing to monitor the air. They also will be checking on potential runoff from the water used to douse the fire.
Reports indicate the plant packages chemicals used in acetone, anti-freeze, solvents, and cleaners.
The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality officials also were on the scene.
