Implosion of PA Smokestacks Goes Awry, Causes Power Surges, Damage

The air blast broke windows, blew dust from the fallen stacks into homes. felled trees as well as several power poles and their wires.

A demolition company is still getting damage reports caused by the implosion last week of two smokestacks at a vacant coal-fired power plant in Springdale.

Controlled Demolition officials said the 550-foot and 750-foot towers fell exactly where they thought they would, Fox 29 reported.

While vibration and noise levels were well below state environmental protection limits, the larger chimney's steel liner "focused air pressure as it collapsed upon impact."

The air blast broke windows, blew dust from the fallen stacks into homes. felled trees as well as several power poles and their wires. The resulting power surge damaged electrical appliances such as stoves, furnaces, air conditioners, refrigerators and TVs.

"They were out cleaning up 15 minutes after the blast, getting streets open, they went around pressure-washing cars off, so in my eyes they’re trying to do right. As long as they take care of the people, I don’t have a complaint. As far as I can tell right now, everybody’s pleased with their response," Allegheny County's Emergency Management Coordinator Bruno Moretti told the medial.
