KS FFs Ask for Road Change in Front of Firehouse
Volunteer firefighters in Leavenworth County are looking for an easier way to cross a busy state road in front of their firehouse.
If they get a call that's to the west, Stranger Township firefighters have to go east first because there's no direct access, Asst, Chie Bert Dunham told KMBC.
“We need a safer way to get across,” said Assistant Fire Chief Bert Dunham. Dunham has worked fire calls with Stranger Township for nearly 25 years.
“If we're going Westbound, we’ve got to get in this lane real quick, and cross here at this crossover. You have to turn sharp.”
He says that U-Turn down the road from the fire station can delay calls between 30 seconds to two minutes.
Leavenworth County Attorney Todd Thompson said: “I think there's a solution out there,”
Hearing about the issue at the department's 25th year anniversary celebration, he said he knows there is a blind spot for drivers over the hill west of the station. The state highway officials are concerned about sight and stopping distance.
“I understand why there's that concern,” he said. “But I think there's ways to do it, and I think there's people who should be looking into this,” he said.
