OH FF Charged with Vehicular Homicide After Engine Wreck

Oct. 25, 2023
A man was killed when his vehicle struck the Columbus engine as it crossed over two lanes of the interstate.

A Columbus firefighter has been charged with aggravated vehicular homicide in connection with an apparatus crash in July that killed a civilian.

Columbus Firefighter Tyler Conners, 25, has been placed on administrative leave, WBNS reported.

On July 23, Conners was driving the engine in the far-right lane on I-270 when he turned and crossed two left lanes.

A vehicle driven by Timothy Wiggins, of Delaware, crashed into the back of the fire truck.

Wiggins was pronounced dead at the scene while a passenger was injured.

The fire engine was being operated with its lights and siren activated. Investigators determined, however, that Conners caused the death of another while operating a motor vehicle in a negligent manner.

Ater Conners was charged, Columbus fire officials said in a statement: "Our hearts are with the family of Timothy Wiggins and everyone impacted by this tragic accident. Firefighter Conners has been placed on administrative duty pending the conclusion of this criminal case. At that point, an administrative investigation will determine whether any division policies were violated. We ask for your patience as the facts are determined. The core mission of the Columbus Division of Fire is, and always will be, protecting and saving lives."

Conners is scheduled to appear in court on Friday.
