A massive explosion that was felt for miles around Arlington Monday night was sparked during standoff between police and a man who fired a gun and flare gun.
Police arrived at the home in the Bluemont neighborhood before 5 p.m. for a report of a man who fired shots.
They determined he had fired dozen of flares into the area, but fox5dc.com reported that no damaged was found.
Police obtained a search warrant and when they attempted to execute it, the man fired a gun at police.
"The guy inside wasn't responding and they drove a SWAT truck through the front door and then shots were being fired," neighbor Alex Wilson told the television station.
"They tell him to back up from the window and, at that point, they were driving forward to the window and that's when the whole place went up," he said.
Arlington Fire and EMS responded and worked two hours to control the fire, which included small fires in the surrounding area.
Officials told area residents to shelter in place after the blast and no injuries were reported.
"This guy has been cooped up for years," Wilson said. "He’s closed off his windows, no one has really seen him for years."
The ATF ATF dispatched fire investigators are on scene to assist.
