Firefighters in the nation's capital spent hours trying to control a blaze in a former firehouse that spread to a building next door.

The fire in the historic building on North Capitol Street was fed by an uncontrolled gas line, WRC reported.

A portion of the firehouse collapsed during the fire which crews said was difficult to fight.

Firefighters finally got the fire under control just before 4 a.m.,

Several homes in the area were evacuated as fire spread through the four-story building under construction next door.

A firefighter in trouble called a Mayday, but was rescued by another.
