A duplex fire in Newton left a man dead Sunday morning.

An off-duty Boston firefighter spotted the heavy fire about 8:30 a.m. as he was driving on the highway and called 9-1-1, Newton Fire Chief Greg Gentile told WCVB.

Firefighters made an aggressive attack and conducted a primary search after they were advised that there was a possibility that someone was still inside, the chief said adding that the other residents made it out on their own.

They found the man on the first floor and removed him. However, he died of his injuries.

"This is obviously a tough morning, a tough morning for everyone involWe'll make sure everyone has the resources that they need."

The cause remains under investigation.
