The Great Lakes Marine Firefighting Task Force created several scenarios aboard the ships for the crews to handle.

Firefighters from all over the Great Lakes Region came to Oregon this week to learn how best handle  freighter fires both on the lake and while docked.

The Great Lakes Marine Firefighting Task Force created several scenarios for crews to handle during a training session.

There has been an uptick in incidents on the lake in the past few years, WTOL reported.

Firefighters who attended the training learned it's essential that crews be prepared to handle any type of emergency that may occur on a ship.

They also learned the importance of developing a relationship with officials from other agencies they may have to call on to help with an incident.
