Six-Alarm Fire in Abandoned Furniture Factory in Stewartstown, PA, Ruled Arson

April 27, 2024
Eureka Fire Chief Todd Gibney called the blaze "the largest in our history."

A massive six-alarm fire that ripped through a abandoned furniture factory and warehouse early Saturday in Stewartstown has been ruled an arson.

Eureka firefighters found heavy smoke and flames coming from the large structure about 1:54 a.m.

Shortly thereafter, command ordered firefighters to evacuate and begin exterior operations, according to a statement from York County PA Office of Emergency Management.

Eureka Fire Chief Todd Gibney explained the situation to residents on the department's Facebook page: "Your Eureka firefighters and multiple mutual aid companies are currently defending Stewartstown from what is the largest fire in our history - the old Furniture Factory at 13 Mill Street."

"We know this is causing inconveniences to everyone and I ask that you remain patient. We have done our best to get off of the Borough water system but you still may have discolored water for a period of time. Also, multiple roads are shut down in the area," he wrote.

Officers with the York County Southern Regional Police and fire marshals with the Pennsylvania State Police ruled the fire was incendiary, according to The Daily Voice.

Although the fire was deemed under control about 5:15, firefighters remained at the scene.
