May 22—Crews were battling a fire at a Redwood City metal recycling facility Wednesday evening.

The Mountain View Fire Department said, "Thick, dark smoke is in the air accompanied by the smell of burning plastic."

Officials with the Bay Area Air Quality District said they were investigating the blaze at Sims Metal and advised the public to remain indoors to avoid exposure.

"There is potential for smoke impacts in the area & downwind neighborhoods," air quality officials said on social media. Eventually, San Mateo County health officials alerted the public that the fire had been extinguished.

It was not immediately known how the fire started and whether there were any injuries reported.
