One person is dead following a house fire in Oakham early Wednesday morning.

The Oakham Fire Department received a report of a fire at 67 Skyline Drive around 12:45 a.m., according to authorities. At the scene, they found flames and heavy smoke, and they learned a Rutland police officer had previously tried to enter the house but was unable due to the fiery conditions.

Firefighters attempted to contain the flames, but nighttime temperatures around 4 degrees caused hose lines to freeze and created “dangerously icy conditions” at the scene, according to a Department of Fire Services spokesperson.

The flames were brought under control after about an hour, at which point firefighters went inside and found the home’s sole resident dead, according to officials.

“Our hearts go out to the family that lost a loved one this morning,” Oakham fire chief Timothy Howe said in a statement. “This is a sad day for them and the community.”

The cause of the fire is being investigated.
