Firefighters reached 60 percent containment of the Crews Fire, which sparked over the weekend near Gilroy, but evacuation orders have stayed in place.

A wildfire near Gilroy held at 5,400 acres overnight as more than 800 firefighters battling the blaze increased containment while evacuation orders remained in place Wednesday morning, officials said.

Firefighters reached 60% containment of the Crews Fire, which sparked Sunday near Crews Road and Oak Spring Circle, according to CAL FIRE. Firefighters plan to continue removing hazard trees where they have completed control lines.

Fire officials warned that “challenging terrain has the potential to create additional fire growth.”

Evacuation orders for residents from Highway 152 to Gilroy Hot Springs and Prunedale Avenue remained in effect, officials said. As did the closure of Cañada Road from Highway 152 to Gilroy Hot Springs.

The blaze, which drew a response from 835 fire personnel across numerous local and state agencies, has destroyed one structure and damaged another. Thirty structures remain under threat.

An evacuation center at the Gilroy Senior Center was closed, according to CAL FIRE.
