Security Company Still Charging Man who Lost House in Wildfire in Spokane, WA

Safe Haven told the Spokane resident they'll cancel the contract once he pays more than $1,000.

A Spokane resident who lost his home in a recent wildfire obviously no longer needs an alarm system.

Despite losing everything in the Old Trails Fire, Jeremy Fagan continues to get bills from the security company. When he explained his house was destroyed, Safe Haven officials said they'd cancel the service if he pays them as a natural disaster doesn't void the contract.

"You have to buy out the end of the contract, which is going to be a little over $1,000. At which point, I decided to take it up the chain, maybe someone at this company has a heart or some human compassion," Fagan told KXLY.

Safe Haven sent him an e-mail that he still owes them a cancellation fee even though he lost his residence. The company compared the situation to a car with a loan being lost in a house fire.

Fagan said he's concerned about others in the area who may be in worse financial shape being hit by cancellation fees.

Safe Haven officials didn't return the reporter's call to comment.
