On Aug. 24 at 3 p.m., the Osage Beach, Mo. Fire District was dispatched to a reported structure fire at the Malibu Shores Condominiums, 889 Malibu Road. The first alarm assignment consisted of Osage Beach Engines 122, 112 and an Osage Beach Chief Officer (101), Lake Ozark Ladder 21 and Camdenton Ladder 317.
Capt. Karl Blankenbeker reported a multi-story condominium with flames and smoke showing from a below grade unit, and initiated fire attack with an 1 3/4-inch pre-connect. The crew of Engine 112 -- under the command of Capt. Michael Bohrn-- established a water supply by laying a 5" to Engine 122. Engine 112 also provided positive pressure ventilation and deployed an additional 1 3/4-inch preconnect to back-up interior crews.
Deputy Chief Terry Paul arrived and assumed command of fire ground operations. The crew of Ladder 21 was assigned to secure utilities and to conduct a primary search of the units. Off duty personnel arrived and assisted with searching the remaining units. They also checked for fire extension.
Firefighters verified there were no occupants or fire extension in adjoining units. Ladder 317 was advised to stage and await further assignment.
The fire was declared under control within 15 minutes of the arrival of first crews. Although the fire was contained to the unit of origin, adjoining areas suffered smoke damage.
Osage Beach police officers in the area responded to the fire and were able to evacuate two people -- one elderly and one teen -- and two pets prior to the arrival of firefighters.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
