AMHERST, Mass. -- A Massachusetts fire chief said five rescuers saved a trio of "idiots" who became trapped on a 20-foot roof.
Amherst Fire Chief W. Tim Nelson said firefighters responded to a 10:30 p.m. call Monday about three Hampshire College students stuck on a campus roof and they arrived to find the trio had climbed onto the roof of a taller building and jumped to the 20-foot building without any plan for getting back to the ground, The (Springfield) Republican reported Wednesday.
"They're idiots," Nelson said.
The fire chief said the students told them they were on the roof because they "wanted to see what it looks like up here."
Nelson said the students will be billed for the rescue and he will encourage school officials to sanction the trio for their actions.
"Bottom line: We're going to bill them for the response," the chief said. "There was no excuse for it; they chose to do this."
