Officials: TX Church Shooting Leaves 25 Dead, Several Injured
Officials confirm that 25 people were killed when a gunman walked into the First Baptist Church of Sutherland Springs and opened fire Sunday morning.
The shooting occurred around 11:30 a.m. and police later caught and killed the suspected gunman.
A nearby resident told the San Antonio News Express that she heard several bursts of pops, but said nothing was happening when she looked over at the church.
"From what I've heard, someone just walked in and started shooting," Amanda Mosel told the newspaper. He 13-year-old goddaughter was one of the victims.
"There's maybe 50 of us," Mosel said. "It's a small, tight-knit church."
Fire and EMS crews rushed to the scene to treat the injured and several medical helicopters were called to transport victims.
Connally Memorial Medical Center officials said at least 10 victims were transported to this hospital, but wouldn't comment on the extent of injuries.
Four children and five adults were taken to University Hospital, according to a statement they released.
Officials from the ATF, Homeland Security and FBI were called to help the Texas Rangers and the Texas Department of public Safety with their investigation.
Law enforcement officials found the gunman
Sutherland Springs is 30 miles east of San Antonio.
