Firefighters found a man trapped when a large tree fell, and collapsed on a South Heidelberg Township garage Wednesday
Western Berks firefighters found the 74-year-old man pinned under debris and set out to remove the debris to rescue him.
"When we got to (the victim) he was talking with us," Western Berks firefighter Matt Lynch told WFMZ.com. "He was pinned under a lot of debris falling from the ceiling and stuff that was in the attic. He was complaining about some shoulder pain and he had some cuts on his hand and stuff like that."
Firefighters crawled through voids, cutting timbers and removing them along the way.
"This is not something that we do every day," Western Berks Fire Commissioner Jared Renshaw told WFMZ.com. "This isn't something that we even do once a year."
It took about an hour to remove the man. He suffered serious injuries and was taken to the hospital for treatment.
"We'll have our Plan A but with different rescues like that we'll have to have a Plan B, Plan C, Plan D, because sometimes the simplest plan won't work out," Lynch told the television station.
