North Carolina firefighters rescued a man who leaped from a bridge after he abandoned his vehicle following a chase with authorities early Tuesday.

The incident happened at around 2 a.m. when Forsyth County sheriff's deputies tried to make a traffic stop along Interstate 40 in Winston-Salem, the Greensboro News & Record reports. The driver refused to stop and led deputies on a chase that reached speeds of over 100 mph.

According to the sheriff's office, the driver suffered significant injuries, and he was taken to the hospital. Deputies also seized firearms, drugs and cash from the vehicle, and an investigation is ongoing.
