July 12 -- Firefighters rescued a 23-year-old man who became trapped in the chimney of a Mira Mesa home Wednesday.

The rescue operation began around 4 p.m. and lasted about 45 minutes at the home on Hydra Lane near Sagittarius Road, San Diego Fire-Rescue officials said.

“He indicated that this is where he resides,” fire officials said in a statement. “He was taken to a local hospital — fortunately, he was not seriously injured.”

It was not immediately clear why or how the man became lodged in the shaft.

Several engine crews, medics and an urban search-and-rescue crew were involved in freeing the man from his predicament.
