MO Crews use Training, Gear to Rescue Teen from Corn Bin

Clinton firefighters placed panels around the teen to protect him as the operation continued.

Clinton firefighters and rescue technicians put their skills and new equipment to use to rescue a teen from a corn bin Monday.

The victim was taken to a hospital as a precaution, according to KMBC.

Clinton Fire Chief Mark Manuel explained: “It could have been a lot different the way the grain was situated in this bin. He was in the center of the bin so there was a cone of grain going down to the center where the unload tube for the grain is. The gravity in the bin was causing...more grain to come down on the victim.”

He described how the "Great Wall of Rescue" used for the first time.

"What it is – is it’s panels, wall panels on several sections, and when our rescue crew gets to the victim, they will surround the victim with these panels. What this does is create a safe place for that victim to be if any more corn or any more grain falls down that keeps that grain from covering the victim.”

He also lauded his crew for their work at the farm.

“I just wanna give credit to our crews that did the work. Those guys work hard. Very hard. Day in and day out. The train all the time just for situations like this. With hopes we don[t have to put that training to use but when we have to they’re ready to go and they did a great job.”
