A three-vehicle head-on crash Friday night in Linda Vista injured at least nine people, including several teens or young adults, authorities said.
Medics took at least seven of the victims to hospitals with serious injuries, while two others sustained minor injuries, according to San Diego Fire-Rescue Battalion Chief Ed Kinnamon.
The collision, possibly the result of two vehicles racing, happened just before 11 p.m. on Genesee Avenue near Osler Street, near the Linda Vista Community Park, according to Kinnamon and San Diego police Officer Robert Heims.
Kinnamon told OnScene TV two cars were "either racing or accelerating up the street" when something happened that sent one of the cars into oncoming traffic, where it collided head on with another vehicle.
"There were several kids — or young adults — that were inside the two cars" and trapped, Kinnamon said. A special firefighter team trained for technical rescues used the Jaws of Life to free the victims from the badly damaged vehicles.
Firefighters removed the doors and other parts of both vehicles to free the victims in a rescue that took at least 30 minutes.
Medics took the victims to at least three different area hospitals, Kinnamon said.
