Off-Duty MO FF Helps Rescue Woman from Burning Home

The O'Fallon Fire Protection District firefighter saw smoke coming from the building and was aided by a police officer and sheriff's deputy in the rescue.

An off-duty firefighter from the O'Fallon Fire Protection District and a St. Charles County police officer and sheriff’s deputy worked together to save a life Tuesday morning in a house fire.

Just after 6 a.m., off-duty O'Fallon Firefighter Matt Chapman noticed smoke coming from a home on Wood Oaks Drive.

"We took the fence down, got the windows out and then I went in first," Chapman told Fox 2 St. Louis. "Then I heard the woman yelling for help."

A St. Charles police officer and St. Charles Sheriff's deputy were on scene as well, and the three men worked together to help pull off the rescue.

Smoke conditions down to the floor made it hard for them to see, but luckily Central County Fire & Rescue arrived just in time.

A firefighter then entered the home, and on his hands and knees, following directions from the three first responders, he swept the floor and found the woman.

He carried her to the window, where he passed her out to fellow first responders.
