Off-Duty NY Firefighters Save Boy from Rip Current

Two North Patchogue firefighters were enjoying a day off at the outer beach at Smith Point County Park when they were needed to rescue a child who was sucked underwater by a rip current.

Two off-duty New York firefighters rescued a boy who was caught in a rip current Sunday.

Justin Owen and Steven Welsh, North Patchogue firefighters, were spending a day off at the outer beach at Smith Point County Park when they were told that a child had been sucked under the water by a rip current, the department said in an online update. The two quickly swam out to the boy and were able to pull him back to the surface.

Owen and Welsh kept the boy afloat and safely brought to shore. The child was evaluated by medics and reunited with his parents.

"Your North Patchogue Firefighters are highly trained and never off duty," the department stated.
