Woodbridge firefighters borrowed a homeowner's row boat to reach a man whose vehicle was almost completely underwater after crashing into an embankment.

California firefighters rescued a driver who was stranded on top of his submerged SUV on Wednesday.

The driver was allegedly driving under the influence when he crashed into an embankment south of the Lodi Lake dam in San Joaquin County, KXTV-TV reports. By the time crews from the Woodbridge Fire District arrived, the SUV had almost completely sunk into the water.

"(The vehicle) was probably about 90% submerged with just the top of the vehicle showing," Capt. Jaime Ramirez told the TV station.

Although a rescue boat had been requested, firefighters improvised at the scene and borrowed a homeowner's row boat to reach the driver. He was then taken to the hospital with injuries that weren't life-threatening, according to KXTV.
