The U.S. Coast Guard has suspended its search for a 37-year-old man who went missing Saturday afternoon after a boat crashed off the Manchester-by-the-Sea coast.

“The decision to suspend a search is never made lightly,” Captain Jamie Frederick, Sector Boston Commander, said in a press release. “Our deepest condolences are with the family and loved ones affected by this tragedy.”

The Coast Guard did not say why the search was suspended.

Manchester-by-the-Sea authorities were notified of a vessel in distress shortly before 4:15 p.m. on Oct. 3, the town’s fire department said. A medical crew soon spotted the vessel from shore and rescuers rushed to its location to help.

A 67-year-old man who was aboard was rushed to Beverly Hospital where he was declared dead, authorities said. A 65-year-old man who was on the boat was flown by medical helicopter to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.

A dog was found alive on the boat, the Coast Guard said.

Manchester-by-the-Sea firefighters, police officers and the harbormaster searched for the missing man on Sunday with the help of the Essex Harbormaster, Massachusetts Environmental Police, Massachusetts State Police and the U.S. Coast Guard before the effort was called off.

Authorities have not identified the man who died in the crash or said what led to the crash. It is unclear what condition the 65-year-old man is in as of Sunday evening.
