IAFF Urges Senate Committee to Ban Asbestos

June 9, 2022
The IAFF chief medical officer will address the committee seeking to ban the substance, which has been known to cause cancer in firefighters.

International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) Chief Medical Officer Danny Whu, M.D., M.P.H. will address a U.S. Senate committee this morning regarding the critical importance of protecting firefighters from asbestos.

The Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works’ Subcommittee on Chemical Safety, Waste Management, Environmental Justice, and Regulatory Oversight will hold a hearing to consider passing the Alan Reinstein Ban Asbestos Now (ARBAN) Act of 2022 which would ban the manufacturing, sale, importation, and use of commercial asbestos.

The ARBAN Act of 2022 is a common-sense bill that will ban asbestos and bring the United States in line with nearly every other industrialized nation. The IAFF supports ARBAN because it will help reduce a significant source of cancer exposure that firefighters face daily.
