The test can detect more than 50 types of cancer in the earliest stages and is available for free to any active or retired SFFD members (who meet the criteria).

San Francisco, CA – The San Francisco Firefighters Cancer Prevention Foundation (SFFCPF) will sponsor the Galleri Multi-Cancer Early Detection Test, which can detect more than 50 types of cancer in the earliest stages to any active or retired SFFD members (who meet the criteria). The Galleri test is done through a simple blood draw and works by detecting fragments of DNA in the blood that have been "shed" by cancer cells (learn more HERE). If a cancer signal is detected in the blood, the Galleri test can determine where in the body that signal is coming from with high accuracy.

More than 1,400 are expected to be tested.

The tests, being offered at no cost to eligible firefighters and EMTs, can improve the chance of finding cancer earlier, when treatment is more likely to be successful.

This is crucial for firefighters, who are at a higher risk of certain types of cancers. Cancer is a leading cause of death among firefighters, causing 66% of firefighter deaths in the U.S. from 2002-2019, according to the International Association of Fire Fighters.
